Machine Washing Upholstery Fabrics
In order to make your home ‘homely’, you need to ensure that you regularly clean your upholstered furniture before the fabric grabs dirt and the dirt becomes part of the piece. There are fabrics that are easy to wash while others require you to be keen and follow the instruction provided on the manufacturer’s tag.
Most washable fabrics come in the form of loose coverings that are easy to take off for washing. There are various ways to clean your fabrics. You can choose to wash them by hand, put them in a washing machine or take them to a professional cleaner. According to experts, you are only allowed to wash fabrics with a shrinkage of less than 3%.
To know whether your fabric is washable, check the cleaning guidelines provided on the tag or label for a bucket symbol. Normally, the best temperature to wash upholstery fabric ranges between 30° to 40°.
If you are using a machine to wash, then, you need to be extra careful with the settings. Run it half full and allow it to spin gently. On the other hand, if you are hand washing your upholstery fabrics, then, you should be careful not to pull, rub, wring out or stretch the material. It is also advisable to hang them immediately.
